Gameday: Santa Cruz and Gilroy at SHS

Once again it's gameday at Salinas High.

Wednesday afternoon, the Cowboy freshmen will host Santa Cruz at 4:00. The JV and varsity Cowboys will then square off against Gilroy at 5:30 and 7:00.

Salinas Bounces Back at North High

The Cowboys bounced back from Wednesday's tough home loss with a solid road victory Friday night at crosstown rival North Salinas. 

After building an 18-9 first quarter advantage, Salinas took a slim 27-25 lead to the locker room at the intermission. Behind the remarkable play of senior wing Jordan Villaneda, Salinas (13-4, 3-2) scored 21 points in each of the final two quarters to emerge with a 69-55 win over a very energetic North Salinas team. 

Villaneda's line is as complete as you can ever want to see: 30 points on 10 of 19 shooting from the floor (5 of 6 from the FT line), seven assists, five steals, and five rebounds. Joe Delk scored 14 and grabbed 10 rebounds for the visiting Cowboys and Arthur Caldwell piled up 10 points and 12 boards. Kevin Staunton scored seven key points and Chris Hunsdorfer was all over the place as usual. Colby Genasci also put in quality minutes for Salinas. 

In a fine defensive effort, the JV Cowboys (13-4, 3-2) won comfortably 40-26 behind nine each from Jackson Thomsen and Justin Flores. 

In the evening's first game, the Salinas freshmen got things off to a successful start with a 47-43 victory that wasn't close for most of the game. Salinas led 31-13 at the half and 44-21 after three quarters before North High went on a big run to close the gap to three with about 30 seconds to play. Richard Torres made a free throw and Nat Hunsdorfer scored a decisive bucket to end the suspense. William Gray scored 13 to lead Salinas (13-3, 5-0) in limited minutes. LaRon Logwood and Nat Hunsdorfer added eight points and several rebounds each. 

Cowboys Fall to Hollister Wednesday Night

It was a difficult Wednesday night for the homestanding Cowboys as a 21-2 second-quarter lead turned into a 39-36 TCAL loss to Hollister. Arthur Caldwell led Salinas with 17 points and Jordan Villaneda added 12 for Salinas (12-4, 2-2). 

In the JV game, an injury-riddled Salinas team lost to the visting Balers 41-25. 

In the freshman opener, William Gray scored on a layup with 10 seconds left to give Salinas a rousing 52-51 victory. The Cowboys led 27-16 at halftime and 40-31 heading into the final seven minutes of play. Hollister made a strong run behind five three-point goals, but Salinas (12-3, 4-0) had just enough in the tank to come through with the win. Gray led the Salinas frosh with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Richard Torres added 11 points, six assists, and six rebounds. Nat Hunsdorfer and LaRon Logwood also came up big on the boards, the latter sealing the game with an offensive rebound in the closing seconds. 

Gameday: SHS at North Salinas

It's rivalry night as the Cowboys travel across town to play at North Salinas. The freshman game will start at 4:00 pm with the JV and varsity games following at 5:30 and 7:00. 

Freshman Schedule Change

We've made a change to our freshman schedule to adjust for the changes in our dates with Gilroy, which doesn't have a freshman program this year. 

Our freshmen will play Santa Cruz this Wednesday, January 25th, at 4:00 pm at SHS. Our JV and varsity teams will then play Gilroy at 5:30 and 7:00. 

We are working on finding a date when our freshmen will go to Santa Cruz to complete the home-and-home series with the Cardinals. We will announce that game here as soon as we have a date and time.

Cowboys Win Three at Alvarez

It was a dramatic and successful Friday night at Everett Alvarez as the visiting Cowboys earned three quality wins.

In the varsity finale, Salinas trailed 16-10 after one quarter before rallying to take a 26-25 lead at the break. A 15-11 advantage in the third quarter gave the Cowboys the five-point margin that held up at the final buzzer, but not before Alvarez rallied to tie the game late. Salinas then pulled away for good behind big buckets from Arthur Caldwell and Jordan Villaneda and game-clinching free throws from Josef Delk and Brian Amiya. 

Villaneda led Salinas (12-3, 2-1) with 22 points, Caldwell scored 18 and pulled down 12 rebounds, Delk added 10 and eight boards, and Chris Hunsdorfer snared 10 rebounds and piled up his usual array of hustle plays to help the visitors win. Amiya did a fine job off the bench for Salinas after starting point guard Kevin Staunton fouled out in the second half. 

In the JV game, Salinas held off a late alvarez surge to escape with a 56-55 win. Elijah Kirkland led the Cowboys (12-3, 2-1) with 17 points, Jackson Calder scored 12, including two late free throws, and Jackson Thomsen came up big on the boards with 12 rebounds. 

In the day's first game, the Salinas freshmen handed the Alvarez frosh their first loss of the season with an exceptional 64-54 win. A 19-9 advantage in the second quarter staked the Cowboys to a 32-21 halftime lead and Salinas (11-3, 3-0) extended that lead to 53-35 entering the fourth period. Alvarez made a strong run in the last few minutes, but the visitors kept their cool and held on for the win. William Gray led Salinas with 18 points. Nat Hunsdorfer scored 13 and collected 14 rebounds in a tremendous all-around effort. LaRon Logwood added 12 and 12, including another late-game steal that ended the suspense. Richard Torres pitched in with 8 points and a very strong game at the point guard position against the Alvarez pressure. Justin Voong scored seven points and defended the Eagles' best player for most of the game. 

All three teams return to TCAL play Wednesday at SHS against Hollister. Game times are the usual: 4:00, 5:30, and 7:00 pm. 

Cowboys Win at Home

On a night when Salinas High honored Coach Chappell for his remarkable CCS record for boys basketball victories, the Cowboys gave their coach another one for the left side of the ledger. 

After exploding out of the gates to build a 25-2 after one quarter, Salinas led 37-9 at halftime and rolled to a 64-38 win over Alisal. Joe Delk led the Cowboys (11-3) with 16 points and six rebounds in limited minutes. Jordan Villaneda added 10 points as 12 of the 15 Cowboys who suited up got into the scoring column. Five Cowboys finished with five points each: Lane Larronde, Kevin Staunton, Zach Teeter, Colby Genasci, and Isaiah Orozco. 

Other notable contributions came from Brian Amiya (five assists) and Chris Hunsdorfer (six rebounds and his usual array of make-things-happen hustle plays). 

In the JV game, Salinas overcame a sluggish start to win 51-33. Trailing 15-12 after the first period, the JV Cowboys led 30-29 at the half before clamping down on Alisal after the break, holding the visitors to a total of only four points in the third and fourth quarters. Elijah Kirkland led Salinas (11-3) with 16 points. 

In the freshman opener, Salinas trailed 34-25 moments into the final frame before closing with an exhilarating 14-0 run to earn a 39-34 victory. William Gray led Salinas with 18 points. Nat Hunsdorfer went for nine as LaRon Logwood added five, including a decisive steal and layup with less than a minute to play. Ty Windham gave the Cowboys (10-3) a defensive spark off the bench. 

Salinas has the TCAL bye on Wednesday and will return to action on Friday the 13^th at Alvarez. Game times are standard: frosh at 4:00, JV at 5:30, varsity at 7:00.

Cowboys Drop TCAL Opener

It was another classic high school basketball game Wednesday night when Salinas visited Palma in the 2012 TCAL opener. In the end, Palma prevailed 65-62, but not without some dramatic stuff along the way. 

The game was close throughout as Palma held a 16-15 advantage after one quarter and a 34-31 lead at the intermission. 

After halftime, Salinas scored the first six points, but the host Chieftans led 50-43 heading into the final eight minutes. Behind Kevin Staunton's 10 fourth-quarter points and Chris Hunsdorfer's wild and-one bucket with less than 10 seconds to play, Salinas closed the gap to 63-62. Palma then hit two free throws to establish the game's final margin. 

Arthur Caldwell led the Cowboys (10-3) with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Villaneda added 17, including four three-pointers, Staunton had his 10, and Hunsdorfer finished with eight and a whole bunch of outstanding hustle plays, including the season's most memorable blocked shot. Joe Delk was held to three points but dished out five assists. 

In the JV game, an injury- and vacation-depleted Salinas team fell 61-29. 

In the afternoon's first game, the Salinas freshmen prevailed 42-32. Nat Hunsdorfer led the Cowboy frosh (9-3) with 10 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks. Richard Torres scored nine and handed out seven assists and LaRon Logwood added nine points and seven rebounds. Jake Larronde gave the Cowboys a solid effort off the bench. 

All three teams return to action Friday afternoon as the Cowboys host Alisal at Salinas High. Tip times are the usual: 4:00, 5:30, and 7:30 pm.
